Send them away...

Ok, so I read a post on another blog this morning about a mom having a fit over how expensive it is going to be to send her daughter away to an educational camp for the whole summer. She suggested that summer vacation be abolished and school be made year round so that she wouldn't have to deal with entertaining her kid. When did spending time with your child become a hated obligation? Other moms replied agreeing with her and saying that kids get way too much time off of school and should have to spend more time in school because they are falling behind. One mom even said that if her kids were in school more it would keep them out of trouble. Hang on just one second!

Parents have the responsibility of keeping their kids out of trouble. Teachers will instruct your children in math and english, you need to instruct your children in manners. If they are falling behind in school, how about helping them with their homework instead of blaming the teacher who has 30 other kids to worry about too. Their "I spent way more time in school than my kids do" argument sounds a lot like the "I walked to school, uphill both ways, in 10 feet of snow, in July" argument. Adults always seem to think that anyone younger than them has had an easier life. I wonder why these people had kids if they can't enjoy spending long periods of time with them. I am so glad that my parents never treated me as a burden that they had to deal with. My favorite summer memories include trips to museums, the beach, and bike riding through the area parks.

Maybe these moms are simply having a bad day because their 5 year olds just dumped a big bowl of spaghetti on the kitchen floor or recently discovered the joy of scribbling with sharpie marker on the nice white couch. I certainly hope that their disdain for their children is a temporary affliction and that I don't grow up to be a cranky mommy. I can't imagine my childhood without summer vacation and as a college student I am counting down the days till my spring finals are over and I can head home for my last one!

Hi Everyone

As this is my first post, I'll tell you all a little about myself. My name is Jessica and I am a college student in middle America. I love cheering for my school's football team and sitting outside when it is sunny. I also love snowflakes, hot chocolate, and monkeys. My interests are trying to stay out of debt (haha... being in college = being poor) and graduating on time... no one told me engineering would be so tough. Thanks for stopping by, I hope you'll come back soon :)
